Akauk Taung
285
km north from Yangon, located in the
eastern bank of Ayeyarwaddy river. A few
kilo meters north east of the town is
Thayekhittaya (Sri Ksetra), an
archaeological site of the ancient Pyu
capital (5th to 9th Century) . A
sightseeing tour around Thayekhittaya in
a bullock cart is really exciting. The
Sai Htat Kyee Image at Pyay, the stucco
sitting Buddha Image of superlative size
closed to the renowned Pyay Shwesandaw
Pagoda was built in 1919. The Sai Htat
Kyee Image deserves to be classified as
superlative is proved by it height 100
ft, its circumference of the body 97 ft.
With the earthtouching posture, the
gigantic Image is sitting in the open
defying sun, rain, wind and storm.
Shwetaung
This
small town about 14 km south of Pyay via
the road to Yangon, contains two famous
pagodas. The more well known is
Shwemyettman Pagoda, “Pagoda of Golden
Spectacles” and the second is
Shwenattaung Pagoda, “Pagoda of Golden
Spirit Mountain.” As a stupa site,
Shwenattaung dates back to Thayekhittaya
era.
Akauk Taung
On
the other side of Pyay across the
Ayeyarwaddy river, there lies Akauk
Taung hill ranges. Once, it was the
custom collecting centre of cargo boats.
The boats going to and fro had to queue
for paying custom duty. It took a long
time for one's turn. While waiting its
turn, the boatmen made artifacts of
carving in the banks of rocks along the
river. A boat trip around Akauk Taung is
really exciting.
